With six public parks, two public golf courses, four lakes and miles of cycling/walking trails, Vernon Hills has no shortage of outdoor activities. Little Bear Lake, Big Bear Lake, Harvey Lake and Lake Charles provide locals with scenic waterfronts and natural areas to explore. The two public golf courses are Vernon Hills Golf Course and White Deer Run Golf Course. Both have received recognition for their quality of play; Vernon Hills Golf Course was ranked as one of the Top Ten Best nine-hole courses in the Chicago area, and White Deer Run was given five stars by Chicagoland Golf.
Vernon Hills also has a large athletic complex, which serves as the hub of activity for youth and adult sports. The facility, called Vernon Hills Athletic Complex Ball Fields, includes fields for soccer, baseball, softball, football, field hockey, tennis and volleyball courts and a skate park.
There are also two major cultural sites of note in Vernon Hills: the Vernon Hills Memorial Arbortheater and the Cuneo Museum and Gardens. The Arbortheater, built in honor of American Veterans, hosts music events during the summer. The Cuneo Museum is a 1914, Venetian style mansion-turned-art-museum. Furnishings, artwork and even the gardens of the museum are maintained in the style of the Gilded Age, when wealth seemed to be within every American?s reach. The home is one of few of its kind in the region that is still standing.
Also of note is the Kirk Players Community Theater, an organization that has been entertaining Vernon Hills residents for more than 40 years. The group began with a special charity benefit performance in 1966, and continues to raise money for various causes to this day. The Kirk Players also runs summer workshops for students and adults.
